New Jersey Insurance Quotes

Any vehicle registered in New Jersey requires three types of mandatory insurance:

  • Liability insurance, which pays others for the damages that you cause if you are responsible for an accident. It does not cover any medical expenses.
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP), which pays for medical expenses if you or other persons covered by your policy are injured in an automobile accident. Often referred to as "no fault" coverage, it pays your medical expenses whether you were or were not at fault.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage, which protects you if you are in an accident with someone who does not have the minimum level of insurance required by state law.

Note: the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance (DOBI) provides information on the various insurance coverage choices available, or you can contact your insurance company.

The exact coverage limits aren't specific, but the DOBI offers an example of a basic minimum policy.

For comprehensive insurance information, please see Everything You Wanted to Know About Auto Insurance, a 39-page manual from the DOBI.

Your Insurance Card

When you purchase the insurance you need, your insurance company should give you a New Jersey Insurance Identification Card for each vehicle covered by the policy.

Keep the card in your vehicle, and be prepared to present it:

  • Before the vehicle is inspected.
  • If you are involved in an accident.
  • If you are stopped by police for a traffic violation.
  • If you are stopped by police in a spot check.

Remember that failure to present this card when requested may result in fines, and driving an uninsured vehicle may result in fines, community service, license suspension, and insurance surcharges.

Insurance Fraud

Under New Jersey law, this is defined as providing false information to an insurance company while making a claim or submitting an insurance application. It can result in:

  • Incarceration of the individual committing fraud.
  • Civil fines up to $15,000 for each violation.
  • Loss of the individual's driver license.

Reporting insurance fraud: This type of fraud increases the cost of insurance for all New Jersey drivers. To help your fellow drivers and the Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor (OIFP), you can report this violation of the law by e-mail, online, or by calling (877) 55-FRAUD, or (877) 553-7283.
